...circus

the circus was too much for her. i could tell.

***

“delilah piper.” i told the man behind the counter, reaching out and taking the blue ticket from his outstretched hand.
i immediately looked down at it, my glance turning into a stare as i narrowed my eyebrows.
what the hell?
“umm.. bathroom floors..” i stated, looking back up at solstice. fatal? bathroom floors? maybe this was a joke or some kind of theme for the day?

***

“what’re you suggesting?”
i smiled,  tilting my head, my eyes skimming the vibrant array of circus tents.
“let’s go look at the tigers!” i smiled, linking arms with her as we began to walk, discarded pieces of popcorn crunching beneath our feet. there was so much to do here - animals to see, churros to eat and wires to walk.
“what else do you want to see?” i asked, as we started to weave past a noisy family, balloons and drinks in hand. one of the adults tried to squeeze past–

***

it was everywhere and the jerk who spilled didn’t even bother to stop and apologize.
“you’re disgusting.” i stuck out my tongue, staring at her shirt covered in dark brown liquid.
“we need to go find a bathroom.” i mumbled, glancing around in all directions until i spotted a familiar sign.
“this way.” i directed, tugging her forwards.

***

“bathroom floors…” solstice grumbled, reaching down to peel her grimy hoodie off of the ground.
“odd.”

***

“hey, there’s one last show.” i pointed.
“and it’s in five minutes. if we miss it now, we’ll have to come back next year!”

***

we were running, the wheat rubbing up against our jeans and crunching beneath our feet as we cut through the field. our breathing grew heavier and heavier as we sped through it.
“hurry up!” i yelled as solstice started to slow reluctantly.
“there’s the road!”

***

“sol!” i shrieked stopping in my tracks, watching the scene unfold. the suv speeding forwards, closer
and closer
and closer
oblivious to her crossing the road
it was almost too late
and then,
right before impact,
the car swerved, the headlights engulfing my vision
and suddenly
everything
went to-

***

there’s a pinch in my neck

***

i can’t feel my legs

***

i’m too young for this

***

i was dying

i was dying
